Happy South Park Bat Mitzvah, Mutt! You've been an undying fan for longer than I even dream I'll be. Keep it up, my loyal South Parkateer buddy!
(Originally part of a 100-theme challenge, this story introduces Kitty's newfound running gag <being a Portal fan> while centering around Mutt and Kenny's lifelong friendship and a significance behind it.)
“Dude, Mutt,” Kitty got Mutt’s attention one day during school. “I know why you and Kenny are such good friends. You want to know why?”
“Because I remember him dying and nobody else does?” Mutt guessed.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Anyways, what I thought was that it has everything to do with colors.”
“Colors?”
“Yeah! And I’m not even talking about race here. What I mean is that you wear blue, he wears orange. Blue and orange. They are inseparable.”
“Okay, now I’m the one who seriously has no idea what YOU’RE talking about,” Mutt responded. “What do you mean blue and orange are inseparable? I mean I’m not saying Kenny and I aren’t best buds, but I don’t understand what you’re trying to say about colors.”
“Give it time, you’ll see eventually,” she reassured with a smirk.
“… Okay…”
And the time came one day when he was sitting, playing Xbox with Kenny during one of their routine hangouts. After a lot of urging and persisting from Kitty, he had finally bought Portal 2. Kenny had left briefly to get a snack from the kitchen, and Mutt was left to watch the opening screen. For a long time it was an image of the Aperture incinerator- he’d played up until chapter two in the story mode and thought it was pretty good so far- and eerie music played in the background. The screen transitioned in to one of the trailers that had been released for it, and Mutt watched blankly, bored without Kenny there.
“Cave Johnson here!” chimed a man’s voice. He didn’t have any idea who that guy was yet. “Fact: the key to any successful cooperative test is trust.” Two stick figure-like people walked out of a door onscreen and stood before a deadly pit. “And as our data clearly shows, humans…” One of the people slapped the other on the back, sending him hurtling in to the pit. “… cannot be trusted.”
Mutt chuckled.
“The solution? Robots!” The robot in the foreground was clearly defective, and began hitting itself in the head with a frying pan until it finally rolled on to the floor. “Then… fire the guys who made those robots, and build better robots! Then, run those robots through of regiment of trust exercises.” The screen displayed the two robots going through such exercises, such as the classic falling backwards, and the blue-eyed one guiding the amber-eyed one on to something that launched it safely across a pit. “Creating a foundation of mutual respect. Reinforced by the simulated bonds of artificial friendship.” The taller robot leaned away nervously as its partner aimed a laser straight above its head, trying to slice the apple balanced there in half. The apple toppled to the ground. “Inspiring stuff.”
“So… So basically they’re built to be BFF’s,” Mutt noted.
“And finally, we put that trust to the test. Bam!” Orange elbowed blue in to the pit. “The robots give us six extra seconds of cooperation! Good job robots. Cave Johnson, we’re done here.”
Mutt laughed again at this and greeted Kenny as he came back in.
“Dude I figured out what Kitty was trying to tell me. She told me that since you wore orange and I wore blue it was no wonder why we were such good friends, because orange and blue are inseparable.”
“Yeah? What did she mean?”
“She meant the robots in Portal! One’s called ‘blue, the other is called ‘orange’. Apparently they were built with the sole purpose of being best friends. Also, the portal gun fires blue and orange portals. Thus, blue and orange are inseparable.”
Kenny nodded slowly.
“We should’ve known she was talking about Portal. When she’s not talking about Kyle, cats, or school, that’s what she talks about. But I have to say that I agree with her analogy. It IS like we’re just meant to be super best friends,” Kenny pointed out.
“Isn’t it? Now let’s play co-op- naturally you can be orange, and I’ll be blue.”
