This is posted for mostly John, Carsen's and Rachel's benifit. I will never complete it (unless provoked) there is more floating around somewhere
My little brother is such a pain. I sometimes want to smack him for his idocy and sometimes I need to protect him whenever our mom gets scary. But right now I just want to take his stupid ear and twist it until he cries.
“Ritchie put on your shoes!”
“No Nessa they hurt my feet and you’re putting them on wrong!”
I guess I put the left shoe on the right foot and vice versa but mom got the bottle of liquor out so I just shoved Ritchie outside.
Outside is awesome in this colder place. Way more than one foot of snow on the ground, like there would be at home. I was dying to build a snowman, the bigger the better.
One way to take my mind off my mom back home was to bake sweet treats. It started in kindergarten with the easy bake oven but finally now that I’m nine my mom lets me use the oven by myself. She didn’t care as long as I didn’t make a mess and did my own dishes afterwards. My mind went wild and I poured through ever cook book I could get my hands on. Of the book in the house, cook books from the school library and cook books from the public library. Some stuff seemed way too hard to bake so I mostly stuck to cakes, cookies and muffins.
We had a great cupcake pan. For Christmas I got some awesome gifts, other than my red snow boots I got a giant book called ‘100 Easy Recipes For Kids’
I loved that cook book because there was stuff in there I hadn’t tried before but the best gift I got from Santa was the new cupcake pans and the new cake pan. What was so special about these pans were that they were heart shaped. Since I love hearts and flowers and everything cute I was very excited. I’m gonna make heart shaped cupcakes for everyone the first day of school.
I was in the process of rolling a snowball, bigger and bigger. I wanted to make a snowlady with a pretty dress when a grey kitten passed me by. He had a white chest and white paws. I picked him up and flipped him over to hold him like a baby. Cats either love or hate this move and this grey cat was just the kind that freezes up. I went to rub his belly and he calwed at my hand. I screamed out as the cat runs into the next yard. A girl with long brown hair with blonde streaks comes out the front door and picks up the cat, this time the normal way. She looks about my age, possibly a bit older.
Inside my trailer I can hear my mom breaking glass and Ritchie ran off down the street. But this girl next door to me? She can be my best friend!
“So is that your cat?”
“Um.. in this neighborhood we have a lot of strays, he’s kind of everybody’s cat.”
“Oh that’s neat what’s your name?”
“Oh Tammy.” Tammy absentmindedly pets the kitten, her eyes keep going to the one run down house on the end of the block, however rundown it may be it’s still the only house on the block of our other trailers. It’s right next to the train tracks with broken down car parts on the lawn, Tammy’s front yard has old furniture and car parts in her front yard, I have a feeling my own front yard may take on this trend soon.
“My name’s Vanessa. Did you get anything neat for chirstmas?”
Suddenly Tammy’s aloofness goes away and her eyes light up, she drops the cat and goes to meet me at the fence.
“Yeah I got lots of cool stuff, the Jonas Brother’s new movie, a Wizards of Waverly Plave DVD and the new Miley Cyrus CD! I also got these best friend necklaces that are also from Hannah Montana!”
“OH you gonna give the other half to you best friend?”
“I don’t really have a best friend, most of the girls at school don’t like me.”
“Why don’t they like you?”
Tammy’s eyes wander to the house by the train tracks again.
“Long story. But anyway you seem really nice Vanessa. Wanna come in and watch on of my new movies?”
With that invitation into her house to watch a movie Tammy became my first new friend!
I learned the story of the boy who lived in the house by the train tracks. Kenny lived there. Kenny and Tammy had been quite an item at the elementary school. Tammy said Kenny’s friends had been shocked that she would go out with him with her being in the fifth grade and him in the fourth grade. Tammy didn’t care Kenny was sweet and attentive and while his family was poor so was everyone else’s who lived on this side of town yet he still managed to take her to dinner at TGIFridays and a Jonas Brother’s concert. But girls in school were so quick to label Tammy a slut she couldn’t take it anymore. Jealous girls were always so quick to tear each other down at school. Tammy had meant to break up with Kenny but the boy had mysteriously died before she could ever do it. Something that had bothered her to this day was that he came back mysteriously. That’s why she kept watch over his house down the block
“Watch out Nessa, I know Kenny is probably in the same grade as you.”
Tammy said as she handed Vanessa the other half of the BFF necklace.
Even with the warning I went to sleep happy that night. I had my own room, in a town where I could man as many snow men and women I wanted and a new best friend. Things were going to be great tomorrow.
I had woken up super early that morning to frost the heart shaped cupcakes I had made the night before. I put my hair in my favorite hairstyle, pigtails. I loaded my cupcakes into a cardboard shoebox and waited for Tammy to come out so we could go to the bus stop together with Ritchie. But to my disappointment my mom came out of her bedroom, dressed in relatively nice clothes. She went to the kitchen to fill a flask with what I assumed was vodka this time.
“Make sure your brother is ready Vanessa, I’m going to take you kids to school today.”
“Where are you going all dressed up mom?”
“Why?”
“I have a new job, you’ll see. Why do you think we moved out here anyway?”
“Cus you and dad got divorced?”
My mom narrows her eyes at me, she takes a shot from the bottle she was just filling earlier. She then grabs a cigarette and lights it up as she shoves the flask and cigarette carton into her purse. She grabs mine and Ritchie’s hands and drags us to the car. I see Tammy coming out the front of her trailer and I sadly wave goodbye as we drive off to school.
I was surprised to see my mom parked in the faculty parking lot of the school. I was terrified to see this was not a drunken mistake as my mom grabbed mine and Richie’s hands and lead us into the front office.
“Mom what is your new job?”
“Oh sweetie, why do you think we moved to this crappy little town? I’m the school’s new librarian!”
